Wisconsin Land Trust Conference 2026
Milwaukee, WI
March 13, 2026

Session Description
Navigating Communications in a Shifting Policy Landscape
The current political climate presents significant challenges for nonprofits. Executive orders, funding freezes, and increased scrutiny around diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives are forcing organizations to rethink how they communicate their mission and values. In this environment, strong communication strategies are not just helpful, they are essential.
This session explores how nonprofits can develop values-driven, inclusive communication plans that resonate with broader audiences while maintaining organizational integrity and impact. Through practical exercises and real-world examples, participants will learn how to craft audience-centered messaging and storytelling that respects community dignity and agency.
Attendees will leave with actionable strategies to build adaptable communication plans, navigate complex messaging challenges, and strengthen trust with the communities they serve.
Beyond Access: Designing Equitable Land Trust Programs
Land trusts across the country are working to expand access to the outdoors, but access alone does not guarantee belonging. Many organizations have successfully opened their lands to broader audiences, yet still struggle to design programs that reflect the lived experiences, needs, and leadership of the communities they hope to engage.
This session explores how land trusts can move beyond access toward truly equitable programming. Participants will learn how strong internal culture and intentional collaboration with community partners create the foundation for programs that are responsive, inclusive, and sustainable. Drawing from real-world examples and community-centered frameworks, this session will offer practical tools for building trust, incorporating community input, and designing programs that empower staff and community members alike.
Attendees will leave with strategies to strengthen relationships, design programs that reflect community priorities, and create outdoor spaces where people feel not only welcome, but that they genuinely belong.
